LIFE ON LIFE · Following Jesus Together · CALL: Celebrate · Accountability · Learn It · Live It

Discipleship is first and foremost about relationships. This week sets the vision, introduces how we'll meet, and makes space to hear each other's stories. Keep the teaching portions quick and give the bulk of your time to sharing life.

Key verse · Matthew 4:19 (NIV): 'Come, follow me,' Jesus said, 'and I will send you out to fish for people.'

Celebrate (≈10 min)

</aside>

Begin by naming the vision out loud: this is a space to follow Jesus together, enjoying and obeying him, and helping others do the same. Since this is your first gathering, take a few minutes to explain why you're gathering and the vision you have for this group. You'll share the vision briefly like this every week.

Accountability (≈5 min, light this week)

</aside>

There's no last week to review yet, so keep this short. Name the commitment you're making to one another: to show up, to be honest, and to help each other follow Jesus and invite others.

Discovery Bible Study: Matthew 4:18–22 — a core picture of what discipleship looks like.

Read together — Matthew 4:18-22 (NIV):

Jesus Calls His First Disciples

18 As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 19 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” 20 At once they left their nets and followed him.

21 Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, 22 and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

Two questions we'll keep returning to all eight weeks:

  1. What does it mean to follow Jesus? We follow by learning what he commanded in the Bible and where he's leading us now, and then living it out.
  2. What does it mean to fish for others? Jesus invites us to help make disciples of those who don't yet know him: praying for, serving, loving, and telling them about him.

This is the heart of our definition: following Jesus together by enjoying and obeying him, and helping others do the same.
